A bit about me

As an academic I have always attempted to combine my experience of working in the media industries (TV production and PR) with my passion for interdisciplinary research and scholarship. I am particularly interested in the ways in which culture impacts on media content and how in turn media impacts on culture and society. My principal research interests are at the intersection of media, religion and philosophy. Recent projects include an investigation on Hollywood epics and the way in which their recent revival reflects a longing for grand narratives as well as a monograph exploring the spiritual and ethical dimensions of contemporary Science Fiction cinema. My latest monograph explores the history and aesthetics of Sword and Sandal shows on Television. I also have a broad range of teaching experience, from undergraduate classes in media studies and philosophy, to MA modules in film studies and corporate communications. My current research project looks at Virtues in film and television, you can find out more about it on the project page.

Why Calliope’s Realm?

In Greek Mythology, Calliope is the muse of epic writing and poetry. As a scholar interested in Epic Cinema – with a longstanding love for Greek mythology – she has always been an inspiration to me.

In my current research, I am very interested in how contemporary society creates their own myths as well as how we appropriate more traditional myths, ideologies and religions into our modern worldview.
